God in Evolution

by Julian Lee Goldberg

There was a time, a fabled time...
A few thousand years before this age...
When a desert people asked:
"From where was it that we came?"

Their holy priests declared:
That "All has come from One!"
They called him God Almighty.
And he ruled from Heaven above.

Conceived in man's image,
With emotions of jealousy and want
God demanded to be known and worshipped
Unleashing wrath on those who won't!

He created the world in six short days,
Separating darkness and light!
The Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve...
He was a being of infinite might!

When he saw the world had sinned,
With a flood he wiped them out!
Before giving Ten Commandments
To Moses on a mount.

And so the people listened
To the storyteller's tales...
They sung and prayed to God above
But his silence would prevail.

......

Time passed... The Romans came....
And so did the Second Act...

From Nazareth came Jesus,
Crying out "The world will end!"
They nailed the troublemaker to a cross.
But his legend would ascend...

One called Saul said "I have seen his spirit on the road!"
"Now I am Paul and you will heed the words I will off-load!"

"We have all sinned, us wretched things!
The only way out is faith!
You must believe in Jesus Christ!"
(or on Judgement Day you will be smite!)

The story began to to twist and grow....
God incarnate! Miracles, you know?
And then: a vision of Armageddon!
(after some bloke ate a dodgy mushroom)

Heaven, Hell, and Heroes
Conjured fear and hope in people's minds.
A narrative, a morality
To make sense of troubled times.

......

Fantastic stories were told
And those stories were written down.
And it was this act of writing
That would preserve those stories for all time...

A book of myth and legend;
Of power and control.
The book was called the Bible,
Peddling salvation for the soul.

Human words were named divine!
Rival ideas were felled!
Wars were waged in the Bible's name!
Disbelievers: threatened with hell!

The dark ages fell
Upon the human race;
A time of want and hunger
With a sad corrupted face.

......

But through the darkness came
Some brave and brilliant souls,
Who looked at the world and realised,
That not all was as had been told.

One called Galileo,
Said the Earth went round the Sun!
We were not the universe's centre!
Our self importance was undone!

Mathematicians like Newton and Descartes,
Began to measure and compute.
Revealing intricate laws of nature,
A God who was less of a brute...

And over time, change happened...
A veritable Enlightenment of thought!
Science and sharpened reason,
Against superstition, fought!

Evidence became the key,
Nature was the lock,
Through testing the door was opened
And our minds became unblocked!

Mathematical laws of motion,
E = mc squared!
Species in evolution.
The substance had been bared!

A grand understanding emerged
Of a unity so fine
With exquisite beauty of process,
Revealing Nature: the true Divine!
